MATT:
And I say “amen” (Amen!)
To the man I was (Ahh)
“Amen” giving closure (Amen! Ahh)
And I say “amen” and start again (Amen)
A bright new day begins (Ahh)
A bright new day begins! (Ooh Ahh)
ALL:
Here at the academy
We may not all agree
But we all love freely
We all came here to learn
So one day we can earn
A living wage, debt free
Here at the Academy
Here at the Academy
Here at the Academy!
ELLIOT:
I may be far from home
But I trust that You are with me, Lord
Even in this place where I don’t belong
ALL:
Here at the Academy!
NATALIE:
Now I know you’re on your own
But I’m just a call or text away
To come back home, son
You don’t need a reason
ALL:
Here at the Academy!
NATALIE:
You will visit right?
FARID:
Mom, you have to go now
NATALIE:
Maybe next Friday?
FARID:
I have to go to orientation
NATALIE:
If you need anything -
FARID:
You can’t come to college with me
NATALIE:
I have to work most weekdays
But most nights I’m free
FARID:
Mom!
We have to continue
The freshman orientation song
MATT:
Imagine the Academy
Where everyone is as chaste as me
No drugs, no gays
No alcohol, no bad days
ALL:
Here at the Academy!
DAVID:
Oh! To be surrounded by
Judgmental Christians
Taking eye for an eye
If they took the time to know me
They’d look sideways
ALL:
Here at the Academy!
MATT:
Just because you’re going apostate
Doesn’t mean you have to be jealous
Of my happiness, David
DAVID:
Thanks for your empathy, Matt
Very heartfelt, wow
MATT:
You know I love you
DAVID:
I love you, too
MATT:
No homo, of course
DAVID:
So homo, of course
MATT:
David!
You’ll get us expelled
Before we even start
DAVID:
And the award for
The biggest hypocrite goes to…
IAN:
Is that the school’s president?
DICK:
No, that’s the Code of Integrity director
ARTHUR:
Welcome to your future
Of the next four years
Welcome to an education prime
IAN/DICK:
Welcome to adult life
Living on our own!
TRAVIS:
Welcome to the decade
That determines the rest of your life
And the gateway is an all-male
Christian college called Loren Academy
(Loren Academy, Loren Academy)
ALL:
Here at the academy
We may not all agree
But we all love freely
We all came here to learn
So one day we can earn
A living wage, debt free
Here at the Academy
Here at the Academy
Here at the Academy!
MATT:
And I say “amen” (Ahh)
To the man I was
“Amen” giving closure (Ooh)
And I say “amen”
And start again
A bright new day begins

ELLIOT:
Lord, I wanna do
All that You would ask me to
ABNER:
But I don't know how
To do it all now
Could You show me how?
FARID:
Would You fill my soul with peace?
NATALIE:
And guide my hands I give to Thee?
ELLIOT:
Open my mind
NATALIE/ABNER:
Teach me to walk in Your light
FARID:
Let all doubt cease
ALL:
So I can do all You ask of me
ABNER:
Lord, I know that You can
Change a man if he lets you in
NATALIE:
So I offer my heart
Or even part just to start
FARID:
Would You fill my soul with peace?
ELLIOT:
And guide my hands I give to Thee?
ABNER:
Open my mind
ELLIOT/FARID:
Teach me to walk in Your light
NATALIE:
Let all doubt cease
ALL:
So I can do all You ask of me
Lord, come take hold of me
Help Thou my unbelief
Oh, Lord prepare me
Lord, calm my weary soul
And let me know You'll be there
Open my mind,
Teach me to walk in Your light
Fill me with peace
So I can do all You ask of me
So I can do all You ask of me
So I can do all You ask of me

MATT:
Oh oh woah
I gotta keep my standards high
Like your lineman:
Big, tall and wide
So I won’t take my chances
With any man
I gotta hold back
So I can throw my football to the endzone
No, I won’t run it blindly
Just because I can.
No, I won't get hurt
Won't be tempted
When he takes off his shirt!
Uaaghh…
‘Cause boys are the plague
What else do I say?
Men are a disease
They infect me
And though I wish
That not all of them were that way
I know that boys are
Boys are the plague
They’ll just hurt me
TRAVIS:
If boys are the plague
Why would you choose
To attend an all male academy?
IAN:
Not every man is bad
DICK:
I think he’s got a pretty good argument
IAN:
I’m pretty legit
ELLIOT:
Matt, this is crazy
DAVID:
Yeah, Matt
No need to roast an entire sex
Again
MATT:
All men just want to use you
DAVID:
For what?
MATT:
All men want the dick
TRAVIS:
Excuse me
Straight men don't want anything
You got down there
MATT:
Straight men want their own dick
Why else would they masturbate?
ELLIOT:
I usually try to validate people, but…
Matt, this is just incorrect information
MATT:
I gotta keep my focus strong
Don’t try to tell me that I am wrong!
‘Cause I'm my own team captain
I call the plays
When I take my aim (Ah)
I throw the ball the other way! (Ah)
‘Cause boys are the plague (Hey)
Ague and heartbreak (Hey!)
Men are a disease (Me?)
They're suffering (Please)
And though I wish
That not all of them were that way
(Not all of them are that way!)
I know that boys are…
Boys are the wrong play! (Ahh)
They’ll take your heart away! (Ahh)
‘Cause boys are the plague
They’ll take your innocence away!
Boys are the plague
Leave you with heartbreak
Boys are
The plague
Boys are the plague

ARTHUR:
We only repeat
What we know
When we speak
When we’re listening
We might just learn something new
Something new
So stop asking so many questions
And let it be
And maybe you will see…
You’re frozen
Stagnant by what you’ve chosen
Wanting to be unbroken
Unwilling to think twice
Fragile, hardhearted all the while
Living extraneous trials
Behind a wall of ice
Hiding from light
Let go of your foolish notions
Don’t fix what isn’t broken
Take counsel from your leaders
When we believe
You’re frozen
Stagnant by what you’ve chosen
Wanting to be unbroken
Unwilling to think twice
Fragile hardhearted all the while
Living extraneous trials
Behind a wall of ice
Hiding from light
Take your frozen heart and open
Let light in where it’s broken
Close your mouth so you can listen
You don’t have to win
You only repeat what you know
When you speak
When you’re listening
You might just learn something new
Something new

ELLIOT:
For those that curse and scorn me
Teach them a better way
And if I be like them
Show me how to change
Show them love and mercy
They know not what they do
Teach me to forgive them
Help me be like You
Take away my pride
Fill the void with light
Overcome my hardened heart
Take away my fear
That I may draw near
Purify and make me whole
And help me
Change my heart
If I be a villain
Teach me a better way
Make me more a hero
In all I do and say
Take away my pride
Fill the void with light
Overcome my hardened heart
Take away my fear
That I may draw near
Purify and make me whole
And help me
Change my heart
I don't need Your glory
To be a part of Your grand story
Just take Your pen of light
And in my heart write
Take away my pride
Fill the void with light
Overcome my hardened heart
Take away my fear
That I may draw near
Purify and make me whole
And help me help You
Help me
Change my heart

FARID:
I wish I could sing
I wish I could play piano
Or bow a string
Move someone with just a note
I wish I could laugh
I wish I could share my story
No need to hold back
But I’m stuck in purgatory
But I just stand here
Silent I utter nothing
Held back by fear
I wish I could just say something
No words come out
I'm frozen amidst their gazes
So full of doubt
To everyone I'm a stranger
‘Cause why would anyone listen
To what I have to say?
Why would anyone tell me
That it will be okay?
Why would anyone hear me
Or what I know?
Why would anyone show me
That I am not alone?
If I could sing,
If I could play piano
Would someone listen?
The answer has always been “no”
I wish I could laugh
I wish I could share my story
No need to hold back
But I’m stuck in purgatory
Why won’t anyone listen
To what I have to say?
Why won’t anyone tell me
That I am okay?
Why won’t anyone hear me
Or what I know?
Why won’t anyone show me
That I am not alone?
Why would anyone listen?
If only someone would listen!
Then I would sing
Then I would play piano
For someone listening
For someone who wanted to know
For someone who cared to know
Me

ABNER:
Self defense is a lot more
Than just punching and kicking, Elliot
You will find
Martial arts is more than a method
It's a way of being
It's choosing to take control
When others count on you
To stop believing
You gotta talk loud
Speak out
Lean into the discomfort
They try to put your light out
Don't be afraid
To stop somebody
By calling them out
When they hurt you
Make them feel discomfort
For trying to irk you
Stand your ground
Don't let them knock you down
You've got integrity
So live unapologetically
ELLIOT:
But I don't know how
To do that in the real world
ABNER:
You came up to me, a stranger
And argued your way into
Me teaching you self defense
You really expect me to believe
That you give up easily?
ELLIOT:
Yeah
But when it comes to physical aggression
I'm naive, too agreeable
I freeze up
ABNER:
You will find that your training
Will take time and be draining
For both brain and body
If your heart’s just not in it
You might do well to quit it
Blend in with everybody
ELLIOT:
Absolutely not
I can’t just give up on the first lesson
We’ve barely done anything yet
ABNER:
That’s the spirit!
You gotta talk loud
ELLIOT:
Speak out
BOTH:
Lean into the discomfort
ELLIOT:
Don’t let me put my light out
ABNER:
Don't be afraid to
BOTH:
Stop somebody by calling them out
When they hurt you
Make them feel discomfort
By trying to irk you
Stand your ground
Don't let them knock you down
You've got integrity (I’ve got integrity)
So live unapologetically
And go!
ABNER:
Ooooooh…
BOTH:
Ooooooh…
ELLIOT:
If boys are the plague
Then, I'll be ready
ABNER:
Don't be afraid to stop somebody by
BOTH:
Calling them out when they hurt you
Make them feel discomfort
For trying to irk you
Stand your ground
Don't let them knock you down
You've got integrity (I’ve got integrity)
So live unapologetically
ABNER:
Fifteen minutes are up
I’ll see you next week
Make sure to practice
Some of the conditioning exercises
Every day until then
ELLIOT:
Thank you, Sensei

I feel like I've lost my mind
I don't want to talk right now
But I will make the time
‘Cause I want to hear You out
Teach me to
Find Your light
Come to You
And align
Heavenly Father
Am I doing this right?
Heavenly Father
Am I sharing Your light?
Am I doing all You knew that I could?
Loving enough, making good?
Are we close?
Are we far?
Will I come home?
Where do I belong?
MATT:
Where do I belong?
My obscure thoughts digress
I forget to let You know
How do I let go of stress?
And into Your just arms go?
BOTH:
Teach me to
Find Your light
Come to You
And align
Heavenly Father
Am I doing this right?
Heavenly Father
Am I sharing Your light?
Am I doing all You knew that I could?
Loving enough, making good?
Are we close?
Are we far?
Will I come home?
Align my heart to Yours
Turn my eyes forwards
Tune my ears to Thee
Use my hands liberally
Refocus my mind
Help me to align
To You
In all I do
Heavenly Father
Help me do what’s right
Heavenly Father
Help me share Your light
Guide me to do all
You know that I can
Teach me to love
To start again
Let us be close
Even when far
Guide me back home
Where I belong

ELLIOT:
We could go to fancy stores
And pretend we’re royalty
FARID:
Window shop
Then get student tickets
To the symphony
ELLIOT:
Down kettle corn, feel sick
And get lost in a corn maze
FARID:
Find a meadow in the next town
That’s perfect to stargaze
ELLIOT:
Take a break together
From obligation
FARID:
Replace stress and study
With celebration
ELLIOT:
It's nice to have a friend
Who sees who you’ll become
FARID:
Doesn't see you as a trend
Knows your flaws
And doesn't run
BOTH:
One on whom you can depend
FARID:
It's nice to have a friend
ELLIOT:
Should we invite others, like Travis
Or some of the other suitemates?
FARID:
No
I don’t know any of them very well
ELLIOT:
Well, isn’t that the point of
Getting to know each other better?
FARID:
Some of the things to do
Are just for two people
ELLIOT:
Nothing you mentioned
Was just for two people?
FARID:
There's a cafe just downtown
Every table is a chess board
And that’s a two player game
So that obviously wouldn’t work
Or I could teach you fencing
But I only have two swords
And I also don't really know how to fence
ELLIOT:
Lets just take a break together
From obligation
FARID:
Replace stress and study
With celebration
BOTH:
It's nice to have a friend
Who sees who you’ll become
Doesn't see you as a trend
Knows your flaws
And doesn't run
One on whom you can depend
It's nice to have a
ELLIOT:
Moment together
You and I
FARID:
More than one would be better
Not gonna lie
ELLIOT:
Why don't you choose the activity?
FARID:
And you’ll come along?
ELLIOT:
I've already told you I’m free
BOTH:
It's nice to have a friend
Who sees who you’ll become
Doesn't see you as a trend
Knows your flaws
And doesn't run
One on whom you can depend
There is no need to pretend
It's nice to have a
X
ELLIOT:
Ahh!
FARID:
I am so sorry
That was not on the list of activities
I should have asked for consent
ELLIOT:
I thought you were…
You’re gay?
FARID:
I swear I’m straight
I like girls, I do....
ELLIOT:
But you kissed me?
FARID:
I’m sorry
No, I’m
I’m just…
So sorry
ELLIOT:
Do you know what “bi” means?
FARID:
Bye?
You’re already leaving?
ELLIOT:
Farid, I’m not leaving
This is my room

No need for shame
You are His child

DAVID:
My thoughts are spinning
Twisting
Racing
It's a carousel
I’m back again to wonder whether
This is heav’n or hell
It just goes on, and on
And on, and on
And on, and on
Go round, and round, and round
Just like a never ending song
How do I get off of this carousel?
How do I tell you about how
I fell in love with you?
How do I break down all these walls?
How do I open up and let you see
The thoughts and feelings
Swirling all ‘round me?
Spinning in circles
But there’s so much for me to tell
Stuck on this carousel
I never thought that I would ever
Say that I’m in love
I was just at the point deciding
I would just give up
But, then you came into my life
And now I'm circling;
I realize that I am so afraid
Of being seen
How do I get off of this carousel?
How do I tell you about how
I fell in love with you?
How do I break down all these walls?
What if I open up and let you see
The thoughts and feelings
Swirling all ‘round me?
Spinning in circles
But there’s so much for me to tell
On this carousel
I pushed away
Before you had the chance
To push away
But would you stay
If I said I love you?
I love you?
I love you
Or would you push away
Before I have the chance to even say
“Would you stay?”
I hope you stay
How do I get off of this carousel?
How do I tell you about how
I fell in love with you?
How do I break down all these walls?
What if I open up and let you see
The thoughts and feelings swirling all ‘round me?
Spinning in circles
But there’s so much for me to tell
Stuck on this carousel

ALL:
Ooo…
MATT:
A band of brothers join in union
To provoke each other to good works
In looking to the wants of the poor
Searching after objects of charity
And administering
To their wants and needs
To assist;
Strengthening virtues
Correcting the morals
Of their school and neighbors
ELLIOT:
It works but it’s a bit verbose
IAN:
No, I think it’s just wordy
TRAVIS:
We may not actually get anything done
If we don’t have someone to make it happen
MATT:
I propose that we elect a presiding officer
And let him choose two counselors
To assist in official responsibilities
MATT/DAVID/TRAVIS:
Elliot!
DAVID:
It is motioned
TRAVIS:
Seconded
MATT/DAVID/TRAVIS:
Unanimously elected as president
MATT:
An elect brother
An elder in Israel
IAN:
To look to the wants of the needy
FARID:
Be a pattern of virtue
MATT:
Teach our brothers
To edify, be useful
And be extraordinary
What we’re doing is extraordinary
The Loren Brothers
Rainbow Academy
What we’re doing is extraordinary
ELLIOT:
Why am I president
If this was Matt’s idea?
MATT:
You’re very accountable
When it comes to planning
FARID:
You are a bit excessive with your calendar
Choose some counselors
ELLIOT:
Travis, you’re my roommate
And Farid, we spend lots of time together anyways
Do you want to be my counselors?
TRAVIS/FARID:
Sure
MATT:
Everyone, raise your hand
If you are good with that
Great. Any opposed?
IAN:
Counselor Travis and Counselor Farid
Moved and seconded
That the group be called
IAN/TRAVIS/FARID:
“The Loren Brothers
Rainbow Academy”
MATT:
To give a more definite and
Extended idea of the Institution
ALL BUT:
Brother Matthew
MATT:
I propose "academy”
Be replaced with “society”
ALL BUT:
Elliot
ELLIOT:
Well the popularity of the word “society”
Is one of great objection
We do not wish
To be confused with rebellion
If we call ourselves a society
We might be considered a fraternity
Which at this school is unlawful
MATT:
We want to look
To the wants of the needy
ALL:
Be a pattern of virtue
Teach our brothers
To edify, be useful, and
Be extraordinary
What we’re doing is extraordinary
The Loren Brothers
Rainbow Academy
What we’re doing is extraordinary
When a boat is stuck on the rapids
With a multitude on board
We will respond to the pressing call
We expect extraordinary occasions
And call for relief
You can expect our Academy
To be extraordinary,
What we’re doing is extraordinary
The Loren Brothers
Rainbow Academy
What we’re doing is extraordinary
Responding to the call, extraordinary
What we’re doing is extraordinary
The Loren Brothers
Rainbow Academy
What we’re doing is extraordinary
MATT:
Extraordinary
TRAVIS:
Extraordinary
IAN:
Extraordinary

Extraordinary

ELLIOT:
You are not my God
So don’t try to be
But if you need someone to listen
That person could be me
We are children of God
So we are family
We may not get along
But we could try to see
In each other’s eyes
Each other’s side
Put away pride
You and I
If I look through your eyes
Would you look through mine?
Leave bias behind
Look through each other’s eyes?
I’m not asking
For you to like me
But you could respect who I am
My identity
You honor integrity
Or so you’ve told me
You love the scriptures
And don’t they teach
ARTHUR/ELLIOT:
To look through each other’s eyes?
Each other’s side
Put away pride
You and I
If I look through your eyes
Would you look through mine?
Leave bias behind
Look through each other’s eyes?
Would Christ brush aside
Someone seeking him?
If all they wanted
Was a pure heart within?
You just might save your family
Your friends
And your whole life
If you chose to listen
Or at least just try
If you chose to look through
Another’s eyes
ELLIOT:
How about mine?
ELLIOT/COMPANY:
If you look through my eyes
You’ll see we’re on the same side
Seeking to do what’s right
In God’s Eyes
You and I

ALL:
Here at the academy
We may not all agree
But we all love freely
We all came here to learn
So one day we can earn
A living wage debt free
Here at the Academy
Here at the Academy
Here at the Academy
ELLIOT:
Here at the academy
I’m going crazy
Applying to MIT
I’m starting to go insane
Short-circuiting my brain
Losing short term memory
Stress is gonna get to me
If I don’t slow down and breathe
Here at the Acade -
Ahhhh!
Where is my calendar?
FARID:
Calm down
I’m modifying it to include sleep
Did you literally write
“Sleep? Don’t know her”
In your calendar?
ELLIOT:
Did I? That’s funny

FARID:
Don’t you remember
All those silent games we played?
Without a single word
We had so much to say
ELLIOT:
Snuggling is not on my calendar tonight, Farid
FARID:
Elliot!
I know you’re ambitious, but - what?
Do we need to plan
Each moment in advance?
Put down your pencil
So you’re free to hold my hand
What do you see me as?
I am not a pawn
I’m not a chess piece
To play with and then move on
ELLIOT:
I know you’re not!
FARID:
I miss those silent moments
Looking in your eyes
That peaceful longing
Where everything’s all right
Silence can be golden
But are you just tuning me out?
Am I white noise?
Do you hear my voice?
Has our connection become
White noise?
White noise?
NATALIE:
Arthur, this is important to our son!
Why else would he invite us?
ARTHUR:
Natalie, you know my work is important
NATALIE:
So is mine, Arthur!
But is it more important than family?
Than our marriage?
ARTHUR:
Natalie -
NATALIE:
No!
ARTHUR:
That’s not true
NATALIE:
Well, I’m heading to our son’s match
Enjoy your night
ARTHUR:
Natalie, there’s no need to take that tone
NATALIE:
For twenty years I’ve been by your side
And after all this time
You’ve barely held me tight
I’m not a toy to set aside
In your dollhouse
Ask Henrik Ibsen
He’ll tell you that don’t end well
Silence can be golden
But are you just tuning me out?
Am I white noise?
Do you hear my voice?
Has our connection become
NATALIE/FARID:
White noise? White noise?
NATALIE:
Isolation is inhumane torture
Why do we keep on moving towards it?
FARID:
Don't recall being a masochist
But that's how it feels every time we kiss
FARID/NATALIE:
If we just stopped holding back now
If we let all our feelings be found
Maybe we could find some joy then
But for now it's like loving the dead;
This silence!
This silence
Am I white noise?
Do you hear my voice?
Has our connection become
White noise?

Let your light so shine before men
That they may see your good works
DAVID:
Glorify the Father in Heaven
And all his words

Withhold not good
From them to whom it's due
When it is in the power
Of thine hand to do!
DAVID:
Why should I hide my light
For which Christ was crucified?
DAVID/IAN:
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
Changing the world we know
Came fulfilling the law of Moses
For us He did atone
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
For man He gave His life
Broke Himself
So we could be made whole
Full of light!
TRAVIS:
He gave us a commandment
To love one another
MATT:
As he loved us including
All sisters and brothers
TRAVIS/MATT:
Withhold not love
From them to whom it's due
When it is in the power
Of thine heart to do!
MATT:
Why should I hide my love
The love which Christ showed us?
DAVID/IAN/TRAVIS/MATT:
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
Changing the world we know
Teaching us to love one another
So no one's alone
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
The start and the end of
Came fulfilling the law of Moses
Changing the world with
La la love
La la love
La la love
Love
La la love
La la love
La la love
Love
ALL:
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
Changing the world!
Oh!
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
Changing the world we know
Teaching us to love one another
So no one's alone
Jesus is the Ultimate Hipster
The start and the end of
Came to filling the law of Moses
Changing the world with

NATALIE:
You’re a man
Who always has loyalty
What it takes
Nothing is too extreme
Never giving up
Never backing down
All this time
Funny thing
How we use our eyes to see
Never knowing
What’s behind the scenes
No one knows
How you’ve neglected me
All this time
In the background
I don’t make a sound
How you put the blame on me
And when I try to leave
You put it back on me
All this time
You badger me babe
You know it's unsightly
How you always seem
To just wanna fight me
Falling apart
With all you say and do
‘Cause when you
Badger me babe
And badger me nightly
All you ever do
Is just try to smite me
Falling apart
With all you say and do
It’s not me, it’s you
It’s not me, it’s you
I’m deprived
Of the love you say you give
Only lies
That you pretend to live
Say goodbye
To the home you tried to break
All this time
In the background
You knock me down
Try to put the blame on me
And when I try to leave
You put it back on me
All this time
You badger me babe
You know it's unsightly
How you always seem
To just wanna fight me
Falling apart
With all you say and do
‘Cause when you
Badger me babe
And badger me nightly
All you ever do
Is just try to smite me
Falling apart
With all you say and do
So pack your bags
And get on the next train
Don’t forget
To bring all of your shame
Leave all that you tried to take
From me
Oh ooo oh oh!
When you look back
I hope you remember
Memories
Burning to the embers
All the happiness
You stole from me
All this time
About time
To show you my loyalty
All the love
I saved for only me
Never giving up
Never backing down
All this time
All this time
It’s not me, it’s you
It’s not me, it’s you
Say goodbye
I‘m done with all you do
Say goodbye to me and you
It’s not me
It’s you

DAVID:
Maybe you don’t hear me
At least not anymore
It's been awhile
Since I knocked on your door
But someone close to me
Does everything for you
He's torn apart inside
Not knowing what's false or true
He hides away his heartache
He's strong
But he's bound to fall
Please help him
Get off of this carousel
Let him be happy
And not hurt himself
Show him he's wanted
Let him know
That he belongs here
Please give him peace
And joy throughout his life
Even if I'm not the one
By his side
Let him be happy
Whatever that may mean
With or without me
He's not white noise
I hear his voice
Don't let my Matthew become -
Don’t let the man that I love
Become white noise

Short-term memory
I’m losing me
If I met you face to face
Would you know me?

I’ve been known
To lose my memory
Far too many times

I’ve been prone to forget myself
I suppose I said that twice
Emotions and images linger
With no meaning to supply
Overwhelmed by memories

You could make them stay
Remind me who I am
Remind me who I’ll be
Remind me who I was
Remind me
Remind me who I am

People staring
Judging smiles
Whispers behind hands
People speaking
All about me
As if I weren't there
People wondering if he loved me
Or if he cared
But you would listen so intently
To every lullaby
You would watch as the waterfalls
Came pouring from my eyes
You would hold my pointer finger
With your tiny little hands
You would lift me to my feet
Before you could even stand
ABNER:
All those years
I forced your silence
I didn’t understand
People speaking
All around you
As if you weren’t there
If you're wondering if I’d listen
Let me show you I care
NATALIE/ABNER:
I will listen so intently
To every laugh or cry
I'll be there for whomever
You walk down the aisle
I will hold you in my arms
As long as you allow
Let me show you
That I love you
Right here and now
If you need someone to listen

Come pouring from your eyes
I will hold you in my arms

ELLIOT:

When we’re listening

MATT:
Can I say something?
ELLIOT:
Yeah
MATT:
Boys can be men
So why not set a standard for them?
And stop enabling rape
‘Cause allowing boys to desecrate
The mortal vessels our God creates
And shaming guys whose agency
Is torn aside inescapably
Tells the story that ought to be told
Of an academy that was so bold
To destroy its own integrity
Because it couldn’t look past and see
The simple truth
That boys can be divine
Boys are not the plague
No
What are they then?
Boys can choose to be men
ELLIOT:
So, please take your own advice and listen
DAVID:
Lift up the hearts of the wounded
IAN:
Be a pattern of virtue
DAVID/IAN:
Love your brothers
Edify, don’t use them
IAN:
You are extraordinary
DAVID:
Brothers you’re extraordinary
ALL:
The Loren Brothers
Rainbow Academy
Brothers you’re extraordinary
All who can wield a pen
Write and send in your petition
A manifesto denouncing
Dick Bennett’s character
We will protect our brothers
And the school as a whole
We will work to save every soul
For all souls are
Extraordinary

I don’t expect you to say the same

Which I’m so sorry about

And I can’t lie to myself anymore

If he’s ever gonna change
He’ll need to choose to
On his own
Like Abner did
ABNER:
I say “Amen” to the man I was
“Amen” giving closure
ABNER/MATT:
I say “amen” and start again
A bright new day begins
A bright new day begins
O, Lord, my God (Lord, my God)
O, Lord, my Savior (O, Savior)
O, Great Redeemer (Great Redeemer) (Ooo)

ALL:

Elliot:
If x +2 = y, you have a continuous diagonal line.
However if you have (x+2) times (x-2)/(x-2) = y
You would have a graph that looks essentially the same
But it would have one major difference in it;
A hole.
This may be difficult to see for multiple reasons.
The equation might be expanded
Causing it to look a bit more complicated,
Or as I said before,
The graph looks like it’s continuous,
Or in other words,
Without error.
However, just because you have not experienced life
At one specific point on a graph,
Does not mean there is not a hole there.
And as much as you try
To convince someone that there is no hole,
There will always be a hole.
You may even convince yourself there is no hole.
As much as you try to convince others
And yourself that there is no problem
With the way sexual assault victims
Are treated here at Loren Academy,
You are blatantly overlooking a massive hole in the equation.
A hole so undefined that by its existence
You hinder the progression of any line,
Or in comparison, you hinder anyone from feeling
Like they themselves are whole.
I major in mathematics here and I absolutely love studying it,
Especially calculus.
Because Calculus gives me hope.
Calculus is the mathematics of change.
We study how variables modify what kind of way a line changes,
How it progresses, using derivatives, integrals and much more.
Change might be thrust upon us.
But when it comes to internal change,
That is a choice we must make,
We ourselves must put in that effort.
I cannot force you to change your opinions
On the sexual assault policy.
However, I can show you how I have taken calculus to heart
And chosen to change.
When I felt disrespected
By being told I was too naive to understand truth,
I chose to strengthen myself academically,
I chose to work as hard as possible to learn and study.
I have now completed this semester of 11 classes
With a perfect gpa, 4.0, as a result.
When I felt isolated by people who felt my spiritual beliefs
Were only valid when it was convenient for them,
I turned directly to God.
He made up the difference for my imperfections
And taught me how to change for the better,
By teaching me to fail.
To be okay with making mistakes and still stand back up.
And when I felt like my integrity was being challenged
By a code I was expected to live by
That goes against my morals and puts innocent people in danger,
I actively sought to change it.
And when that did not succeed,
I worked instead on changing my environment
To make it a safe place where everyone would feel belonging.
Change can be a choice.
Sometimes we have to change our equation to eradicate holes.
And it takes change to become whole ourselves.
This school will never be whole
Until it changes to fill in it’s holes.
It doesn't have to be that hard.
It's just Calculus.
Thank you.

ARTHUR:
We only repeat
What we know
When we speak
When we’re listening
We might just learn something new
Something new
So stop asking so many questions
And let it be
And maybe you will see…
You’re frozen
Stagnant by what you’ve chosen
Wanting to be unbroken
Unwilling to think twice
Fragile, hardhearted all the while
Living extraneous trials
Behind a wall of ice
Hiding from light
Let go of your foolish notions
Don’t fix what isn’t broken
Take counsel from your leaders
When we believe
You’re frozen
Stagnant by what you’ve chosen
Wanting to be unbroken
Unwilling to think twice
Fragile hardhearted all the while
Living extraneous trials
Behind a wall of ice
Hiding from light
Take your frozen heart and open
Let light in where it’s broken
Close your mouth so you can listen
You don’t have to win
You only repeat what you know
When you speak
When you’re listening
You might just learn something new
Something new
ELLIOT:
For those that curse and scorn me
Teach them a better way
And if I be like them
Show me how to change
Show them love and mercy
They know not what they do
Teach me to forgive them
Help me be like You
Take away my pride
Fill the void with light
Overcome my hardened heart
Take away my fear
That I may draw near
Purify and make me whole
And help me
Change my heart
If I be a villain
Teach me a better way
Make me more a hero
In all I do and say
Take away my pride
Fill the void with light
Overcome my hardened heart
Take away my fear
That I may draw near
Purify and make me whole
And help me
Change my heart
I don't need Your glory
To be a part of Your grand story
Just take Your pen of light
And in my heart write
Take away my pride
Fill the void with light
Overcome my hardened heart
Take away my fear
That I may draw near
Purify and make me whole
And help me help You
Help me
Change my heart

I feel like I've lost my mind
I don't want to talk right now
But I will make the time
‘Cause I want to hear You out
Teach me to
Find Your light
Come to You
And align
Heavenly Father
Am I doing this right?
Heavenly Father
Am I sharing Your light?
Am I doing all You knew that I could?
Loving enough, making good?
Are we close?
Are we far?
Will I come home?
Where do I belong?

Where do I belong?
My obscure thoughts digress
I forget to let You know
How do I let go of stress?
And into Your just arms go?

Am I doing this right?

Am I sharing Your light?
Am I doing all You knew that I could?

Are we far?
Will I come home?
Align my heart to Yours
Turn my eyes forwards
Tune my ears to Thee
Use my hands liberally
Refocus my mind
Help me to align
To You
In all I do
Heavenly Father
Help me do what’s right
Heavenly Father
Help me share Your light
Guide me to do all
You know that I can
Teach me to love
To start again
Let us be close
Even when far
Guide me back home
Where I belong
